About Student Homepages | Top

Student Homepages allows you to create a personalized homepage that contains information about yourself, the projects you are working on, links to your favorite web sites, and perhaps personal information you want to share with your classmates. The Student Homepages screen displays links to all students registered in the course, only those students who have created a Homepage, or only your name, depending on administrator settings.

Some of the options you can add to your Student Homepages are:

  • links to your favorite web sites
  • customize page colors and layout
  • background image
  • banner, upper textblock, and lower textblock
  • hit counter

Adding a link | Top

  1. From Student Homepages, click your name. Your Homepage appears.
  2. Under Options: Links, click Add link. The Add Link screen appears
  3. In the Title text box, type a title for the link.
  4. In the URL text box, type the complete web address.
  5. If you want to upload an icon to display with the link:
    1. Click Upload Icon. The File Upload screen appears.
    2. Click Browse. Your computer's file browser appears.
    3. Locate and select the file you want to use as your icon. The path and filename of your icon file appears in the text box.
    4. Click Continue. The Add URL screen appears with a preview of the icon next to Current icon.
  6. Click Add. Your Homepage appears.

Editing a link | Top

  1. From Student Homepages, click your name. Your Homepage appears.
  2. Locate and select the link you want to modify.
  3. Under Options: Links, click Edit. The Update URL screen appears.
  4. In the Title text box, edit the title for the link.
  5. In the URL text box, edit the web address.
  6. If you want to upload an icon to display with the link:
    1. Click Upload Icon. The File Upload screen appears.
    2. Click Browse. Your computer's file browser appears.
    3. Locate and select the file you want to use as your icon. The path and filename of your icon file appears in the text box.
    4. Click Continue. The Update URL screen appears with a preview of the icon next to Current icon.
  7. Click Update. Your Homepage appears.

Deleting a link | Top

  1. From Student Homepages, click your name. Your Homepage appears.
  2. Locate and select the link you want to delete.
  3. Under Options: Links, click Delete. A warning message appears.
  4. Click OK. The link is deleted.

Moving a link forward or backward | Top

Depending on how you modify the layout of links on the page, the following describes how the Move forward and Move backward options move the links on your Homepage.

Move forward:

  • If you select a one-column layout, Move forward moves the link down by one position.
  • If you select a two-column layout, Move forward moves the link either one position to the right or down one row.

    Note: If the link is the last item on your Homepage, Move forward does not move the link.

Move backward:

  • If you select a one-column layout, Move backward moves the link up by one position.
  • If you select a two-column layout, Move backward moves the link either one position to the left or up one row.

    Note: If the link is the first item on your Homepage, Move backward does not move the link.

  1. From Student Homepages, click your name. Your Homepage appears.
  2. Locate and select the link you want to move.
  3. Move the selected link:
    • To move the link forward by one position, under Options: Links, click Move forward. The link moves forward.
    • To move the link backward by one position, click Move backward. The link moves backward.

Editing or adding an upper textblock | Top

  1. From Student Homepages, click your name. Your Homepage appears.
  2. Under Options: Textblocks, click Edit/Add upper textblock. The Edit/Add Upper Textblock screen appears.
  3. Edit or add an upper textblock by doing one of the following:
    • In the Edit textblock text box, enter your text.
    • Click HTML editor. For help, see HTML Editor. Note: Depending on administrator settings, the HTML editor may not be available.
  4. Click Update. Your Homepage appears.

Editing or adding a lower textblock | Top

  1. From Student Homepages, click your name. Your Homepage appears.
  2. Under Options: Textblocks, click Edit/Add lower textblock. The Edit/Add Lower Textblock screen appears.
  3. Edit or add a lower textblock by doing one of the following:
    • In the Edit textblock text box, enter your text.
    • Click HTML editor. For help, see HTML Editor. Note: Depending on administrator settings, the HTML editor may not be available.
  4. Click Update. Your Homepage appears.

Modifying the layout | Top

You can select a one-column or two-column layout for links on your Homepage.

  1. From Student Homepages, click your name. Your Homepage appears.
  2. Under Customize, click Modify layout. The Modify Layout of Links on Page screen appears.
  3. Select the number of columns of links you want and click Update. Your Homepage appears.

Customizing colors | Top

You can choose a predefined color scheme for background, text, links, and visited links on your homepage.

  1. From Student Homepages, click your name. Your Homepage appears.
  2. Under Customize, click Customize page colors. The Customize Page Colors screen appears.
  3. In the Color Set column, choose one of the predefined color schemes by selecting the radio button for the appropriate set.
  4. Click Update. Your homepage appears in the selected color scheme.

Modifying or adding a background image | Top

You can create a background image, or download an image from the web. The image must be in .GIF or .JPG format.

  1. From Student Homepages, click your name. Your Homepage appears.
  2. Under Customize, click Modify/Add background image. The Modify/Add Background Image for Page screen appears.
  3. Next to Background options, select Upload a file.
  4. Click Continue. The File Upload screen appears.
  5. Click Browse. Your computer's file browser appears.
  6. Locate and select the file you want to use as your banner. The path and filename of your background file appears in the text box.
  7. Click Continue. Your Homepage appears.

Modifying or adding a banner | Top

Adding a text banner

  1. From Student Homepages, click your name. Your Homepage appears.
  2. Under Customize, click Modify/Add banner image. The Modify/Add Banner Image for Page screen appears.
  3. Next to Banner options, select Use text.
  4. In the Use Text text box, enter the banner message.
  5. Click Continue. Your Homepage appears.

Adding an image banner

You can create a banner image or download an image from the web. The banner image must be in .GIF or .JPG format.
  1. From Student Homepages, click your name. Your Homepage appears.
  2. Under Customize, click Modify/Add banner image. The Modify/Add Banner Image for Page screen appears.
  3. Next to Banner options, select Upload a file.
  4. Click Continue. The File Upload screen appears.
  5. Click Browse. Your computer's file browser appears.
  6. Locate and select the file you want to use as your banner. The path and filename of your banner file appears in the text box.
  7. Click Continue. Your Homepage appears.

Restoring a Homepage | Top

To restore your Homepage, you must have first made a back up file. To back up a file, see Backing up your Homepage.

  1. From Student Homepages, click your name. Your Homepage appears.
  2. Under Options: Homepage, click Restore a homepage. The File Upload screen appears.
  3. Click Browse. Your computer's file browser appears.
  4. Locate and select the file you want to restore. The path and filename of the file appears in the text box.
  5. Click Continue. The restored Homepage appears.

Backing up a Homepage | Top

You can create a back up file of your Homepage so that you always have a copy. To restore a Homepage, see Restoring your Homepage.

  1. From Student Homepages, click your name. Your Homepage appears.
  2. Under Options: Homepage, click Backup a homepage. Your browser's file download screen appears.
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions. A backup of your Homepage is created on your computer.

Warning: Once the back up file is downloaded, do not modify it. The file is encoded by WebCT; any change will permanently destroy the file.

Clearing a Homepage | Top

This feature deletes everything on your Homepage.

  1. From Student Homepages, click your name. Your Homepage appears.
  2. Under Options: Homepage, click Clear the page. A warning message appears.
  3. Click OK. Your Homepage is cleared.

Viewing another student's Homepage | Top

The Student Homepages screen displays a list of students. If a student has a Homepage, their name displays as a link.

Note: Depending on administrator settings, the list contains all students registered in the course, only those students who have a Homepage, or only your name.

  1. If there is more than one page of Homepages, to display other Homepages, either select a range of records from the Page drop-down list or click Next page .
  2. To view a student's Homepage, click their name. Their Student Homepages screen appears, displaying the student's Homepage.
